What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is all about learning a trade under the supervision and mentorship of and experience tradesperson. NZHITO apprenticeships have been designed to be completed over a three-year period.

As an apprentice you be an employee in the horticulture industry and get paid, but while you are working you will be gaining formal recognition of the skills, experience and knowledge because you will be working towards a National Certificate qualification.

So you have heard about Modern Apprenticeships…

The Modern Apprenticeship initiative was launched in 2001, its aim being increase the number of young New Zealander’s who were entering into recognised industry training. Modern Apprenticeships are aimed at youths between the ages of 16-21 years at the start of their training. You are supported throughout your training by a Modern Apprenticeship coordinator or a training advisor. If you choose to become Modern Apprentice with the NZHITO you will need to meet our entry criteria.

If you are over 21 year don’t worry you can still do a three year apprenticeship programme with the NZHITO and we will offer you the same level of support that a Modern Apprentice will get.

We also offer shorter duration industry training programmes designed to be completed over one or two years, These programmes can count towards the full three year apprenticeship programme if you decide to carry on further with your training.
