A practical activities day was held at the NZRA conference in Marlborough on the 5-6th June, where the sector winner and representative was announced.

Congratulations to Jasmine Zimmerman who will be representing the Amenity Sector this year. Jasmine works for the Wellington Botanic Gardens.

Jasmine (26), looks after plants that are happy living in that city. Jasmine’s title of Collection Curator Shrubs including responsibility for trialling specimens for a programme aimed at educating the public about plants that will thrive in the region.   She also manages and maintains six specialised collections at the 25 hectare gardens – the camellias, rhododendrons, vireyas, hydrangeas, Asian woodland plants and native stream-side plants - ensuring her collections look good for visitors.   This involves new planting, pruning, weed control, pest management and preparation of plant records and labels.

Jasmine has been at the Gardens for almost five years. She completed a three-year apprenticeship and has gained her Advanced National Certificate in Horticulture Level 4 Amenity Horticulture, Jasmine says it is the opportunity to work outside in all seasons that makes her job at the Gardens so appealing.

It is also true to say she never leaves her work, as she lives in a house within the Gardens and it comes as no surprise that gardening is at the top of her favourite pastimes.
