How Training Works

The NZHITO treat Apprenticeships and Industry Training as essentially the same thing, the focus for us is on raising the skill levels in your workplace and in the horticulture industry in general.

Duration

Our apprenticeships have been designed to take place over a three year period. However as assessments are based on competency rather than a time component, the duration can be longer or shorter dependent upon the efforts of both the apprentice and the trainer.

Who can do them?

Our apprenticeship programmes are open to people of any age, and in addition to our three year apprenticeships we also offer shorter duration training programmes of one or two years.

How does it actually work?

Training with the NZHITO has been developed to mirror workplace procedures and practices, this ensures that the skills and knowledge your apprentice is learning on the job on a day to day basis counts towards their qualification. Bearing that in mind the majority of your apprentices training will take place in their place of work or what we refer to as on-job. In addition to the on-job training we also have some off-job component in most training plans, this allows your apprentice to go off-job to learn specialist skills and/or the theory behind what they have been doing while at work.

Assessment

The NZHITO provides you or your designated workplace trainer with assessment guides to assist you with your decisions to sign someone off as competent in a particular skill. To sign someone off as competent you must become a registered workplace assessor with the NZHITO.
