Arboriculture
Arboriculture – a fast growing industry in New Zealand, arboriculture deals with the specialization of tree care. Arborists used to be commonly referred to as tree surgeon, however the term arborist is now becoming increasingly common.
Arboriculture Courses Available
We are currently offering six National Certificates in Horticulture in the Arboriculture area. Basic Climber (Level 3) Utility Worker (Level 4) Advanced Climber (Level 4) Consultant Climber (Level 4) DatesTraining is designed to occur while you are in employment, so you can start training with the NZHITO anytime during the year. |
Duration
Like all our Modern apprenticeship the Arboriculture apprenticeship is designed to take three years to complete, and you will work towards all the certificates mentioned above
However don't forget that training with the NZHITO is self-paced, so the harder you work at your qualification the quicker you can complete it.
Location
The majority of your training will take place in your place of work, however it maybe necessary for you to attend some training away from your workplace when we cover specialist areas of study.
Entry Criteria
You need be employed within the horticulture industry and have a
desire to learn.
If you don't yet have a job in horticulture your locally based NZHITO representative may be able to help you find one.
Course content
Planting trees and shrubs; pruning young, and mature amenity plants; plant maintenance; chainsaws, health and safety; transplanting trees manually and with specialist equipment; using climbing equipment in arboriculture; basic and advanced limb, sectional and tree felling techniques; using brush chippers and stump grinders; climbing and moving in trees; working and operating platform vehicles in arboriculture situations; planning and managing complex tree work; knowledge of application of tree law; the New Zealand arboriculture industry; site access; site assessment; identifying amenity trees and shrubs; tree inspection; diagnosing amenity plant health problems; working around electricity in an arboriculture situation.
