Financial Management Skills for Small Business
The New Zealand Horticulture Training Organisation is delighted to present to you a training initiative developed in conjunction with accountancy software company Mind Your Own Business (MYOB) with support from the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) and the Department of Labour (DOL). The program will be presented and delivered by McGirr Training of Wellington. The NZHITO will use this opportunity to lead the way in delivering business skills by distance learning to small and medium business through out New Zealand.
Introduction
The horticulture industry includes many small business and franchise owner/operators who are not employed by major horticulture contractors or employers. While the NZHITO has an active and growing apprenticeship and training scheme running, we acknowledge there is also a need to support businesses involved in horticulture. These are often the small companies where the infrastructure of the business is often dependent on the key working people.
This particular group are often referred to as the ‘mum and dad’ businesses with often one spouse/partner working in the trade and the other spouse/partner managing the office administration, compliance issues, marketing, staff and personal salaries, taking orders face to face or via phone and/or email.
It requires a level of, IT, communication skill, problem solving and financial understanding that may also be termed ‘financial literacy’... It is a commonly held view of many bankers and other professionals that small businesses can struggle if they are not supported in his area.
