The Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture Education Trust in conjunction with the New Zealand Horticulture Industry Training Organisation organised a national competition to inspire and acknowledge the talents of the young people employed in the horticultural industry.
The pick of the crop
2006 saw the second year of competition for the Young Horticulturist of the year.

These included a hortisport event, where all finalists raced against each other, as well as the clock, tackling assorted horticultural-based contests. The final challenge was held at a dinner event at the Ellerslie Convention Centre, where each of the finalists made a short speech and answered a series of quick-fire questions.
